Despite this year seeing the best and worst that the football world has to offer kids just love the sport and that probably means that if your boy or girl is football mad they’d love a football-themed Easter egg. One of the few chocolate companies that creates stuff like this for kids is Thorntons. And they don’t stop there; they also do a milk chocolate football boot and a plaque that you can have personalised. I didn’t buy those to review as I’d be here all year reviewing their Easter range.

Of course the egg’s packaging is clearly football-themed whilst the egg itself has a white chocolate circle stuck to the front representing a football. Whilst you can also buy individual foil-wrapped footballs, it’s very difficult to turn an egg shape into a ball-shape without the Easter theme being lost completely. But it looks good an even on the reverse it has a Thornton’s logo moulded into it which gives it an extra touch.

The chocolate itself is most definitely aimed at children as its incredibly sweet, in fact it’s 53.8% sugars and I know if I ate this entire egg I’d be getting a sugar rush and perhaps even an Easter egg. Kids are made of stronger stuff and they’ll love the egg. The shell ranges from 2mm to 4mm in thickness so despite it being a reasonable size in terms of height and width, it’s only a 160g egg – which is typical for this category of Easter egg, but shouldn’t allow your child to consume too much chocolate if you manage to limit the number of eggs they have.

Even though the chocolate used isn’t the greatest ever made, it’s still a million times better (in my mind) than the hideous Nestle eggs the supermarkets are selling for £1 each. These eggs are 30% minimum compared to the 25% Nestle use. I was slightly perturbed by the rough and ready nature to the shell though as the edges didn’t seem to be finished or checked properly.
Overall it’s a good egg if you want to give your child something football themed. It’s not the best egg that Thorntons do but if you didn’t want to buy from either Cadbury, Nestle or Kinnerton, it’s a good choice.
