Divine 70% Dark Chocolate Easter Egg 55g

I've tried the Divine Dark Chocolate Mini eggs and the Divine 70% Dark Chocolate Hearts in the past and absolutely loved the both. So it was no surprise that I thought this 70% Dark Chocolate Easter Egg was going similarly fantastic.

The nice people at Divine Chocolate sent me this one before they're available in the shops so I don't know much about the pricing yet.

To some the egg may look uninspiring as its not all that big and doesn't "shout out" at people, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in a purely delightful taste.

Divine are obviously conscious of the amount of packaging they use and so there's not going to be any plastic spacer to make it look gorgeous. However, the chocolate itself does the talking.

But when you do get it out of the box and unwrap the foil you'll see a wonderful small dark chocolate egg that has a fantastic aroma - it reminds me of the slight beachy aroma from the sand dunes behind them. Perhaps its the natural, clean, unadulterated aspect to the aroma? Having checked the available sources of information I can see that the cocao for this Easter egg comes from the Kuapo Kokoo plantation in Ghana which is pretty far from the sea so the flavour must just come from the natural ingredients used?

The flavours are beautiful too. Perhaps, they're not as direct as the 70% cocao would entail. It's more of a mild, almost delicate dark chocolate taste which is immensely pleasant. And to consider that they've managed to get such a well rounded, smooth flavour without the use of any artifical flavourings or preservatives (nor artificial flavourings) is a triumph in chocolate production.

But praise should also be given for the texture of the Easter egg. It's just as smooth as the taste. It lingers in your mouth and allows the complex flavours to come out slowly. It really is a great Easter egg!

Rating:

Taste: 90% - its rich, flavoursome, complex yet unpretentious - a delight

Texture: 75% - smooth, silky and each mouthful will leave you wanting more!

Appearance: 70% - it lets itself down on the outer appearance - but the environment is infinitely more important.

Nutritional Information: 80% - loads loads of information available including the energy/calories per egg, protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre and sodium per 100g and per 55g egg

Packaging: 90% - all recyclable, and nothing unnecessary

Price: 80% - ~~I think it'll retail anywhere around £3.50~~ I've just heard back from Divine and they'll be around £3.00 - even better value!

Overall: 80.83% - a gorgeous Easter egg that not only satisfies your taste buds, but also your heart

I got this cute little Easter treat from Marks And Spencer for 49p I think it was and its fantastic value for money. After trying the Malteaster chocolate bunny I was fearing the worst - but thankfully it was wonderful.

The packaging may look decidedly average, the taste, however, was anything but. The wonderful thing about this chocolate bunny is that it tastes very much like a Cadbury's Wispa and has the same sort of bubbly interior.

Another great feature is that the chocolate is incredibly chewy. I don't know how they manage to do it, but the chocolate doesn't melt anywhere near as quickly as other chocolate, but seems to stick to your teeth and takes ages to disappear. It's certainly different.

There's a distinct nutty flavour to it that does last a good while and you'll find yourself nibbling off little bits as the chocolate is quite firm. Its a great cheap chocolate treat for kids. So if you ever find yourself going past M&S then pop in and take a look at their chocolate range!

Rating:

Taste: 65% - its pretty good for a cheap chocolate treat

Texture: 67% - its a strange one. Its crisp but chewy and very unusual

Appearance: 50% - mine came out damaged, and the packaging isn't too inspiring

Nutritional Information: 90% - its all there including typical nutritional values

Packaging: 70% - in terms of its environmental impact then its pretty good. But in terms of protecting the product it was poor.
Price: 80% - very good value for money

Overall: 70.3% - great if you're looking for something inexpensive to give to your children

Lindt Milk Chocolate Gold Bunny

I think Cat summed the Lindt Milk Chocolate Gold Bunny perfectly when she insisted that she didn't believe that "Lindt lives up to the hype". The little bunny looks gorgeous, But the flavours don't match the initial impression given by the packaging.

Yes it may have a pretty little red ribbon on it. It may also have a cute little bell to go with it. But the chocolate doesn't come up to the standards I'd like and expect, especially as I might be spending £3.50 of my hard-earned cash on it.

The Lindt Gold Bunny also looks great when you remove her clothes. Ok, that just sounds wrong, but you can't fault the interest factor. The shape is a wonderful detour from the usual egg-shaped Easter chocolate.

Another plus point is the thickness of the chocolate. It's considerably more substantial than the Mini Smarties Shakers Easter Egg that I reviewed yesterday. The issue is that you're getting more chocolate that just isn't all that nice!

The flavour is incredibly smokey. I don't know what could cause that, but its a flavour that I wouldn't wish to try again. I'm sorry guys, but the Lindt Gold Bunny isn't one that'd make me hop with joy.

Taste: 20% - I really didn't like it

Texture: 65% - it was ok, but nothing special

Appearance: 85% - I did love it, but you could tell it was mass-produced.

Nutritional Information: 60% - there was some there, but difficult to read

Packaging: 70% - I'm sure that many would through the foil in the bin though

Price: 60% - poor value for money

Overall: 60% - I won't be trying one of these again!

Mini Smarties Shakers Easter Eggs

These Mini Smarties aren't worth the money. I'm not going to beat about the bush. The Smarties Easter Egg with a Mug decorating kit I reviewed last year certainly was, even the normal Smarties Easter egg was barely acceptable, and the Smarties Mini eggs absolutely delicious. But these mini shakers are just naff.

It may have cost 45p, but I'd like my money back. The egg itself is only about 50mm (2 inches) tall, with a thickness that ranges between 4mm and 5mm and you get about 15-18 very small smarties inside.

Its the taste of these that is the most dissapointing factor. They taste like cardboard. I'm not kidding you, they're deadful. I'd love to know what they're made of.

The actual taste of the mini egg shell itself is hardly better. It's sweet and devoid of any other taste. It's their typical naff stuff. If they just stuck to the bags of mini eggs I'd be very happy. But this is just dreadful. Opps, I've just finished it. I'm either hungry or they're not all that bad when you get going. I'd much rather have a Lindt Milk Chocolate Mini Easter Egg though.

Whilst in my local Marks & Spencer getting one of their weekend Dine in For £10 things I thought I'd pop over to their chocolate aisle to see what they've got going on for Easter and Valentine's Day, I saw that they had these Raspberry Dusted Chocolate Eggs for only £1.99 so I thought I'd give them a go.

I've got to say, I've very disappointed by them. I love fruity chocolate. Hotel Chocolat do great ones with their Blueberry and http://www.easter-eggs.org.uk/2009/02/strawberry-sensation-egg-sandwich.html Egg sandwiches and their awesome Chocolate Puddles, but these chocolate eggs fall very far short.

The raspberry coating is mild and the milk chocolate inside is of poor quality. They're distinctly average. Personally I wish I could get my £1.99 back. I bought two of their Millionaire's puddings at the same time and they were infinitely more delicious.

I'm not going to do a big review here as I'm so disappointed. For the couple of quid you get 14 mini eggs that just aren't worth the money. Simply avoid them and buy the real thing in terms of the Charbonnel et Walker Bucks Fizz Truffles instead.

Cadbury Caramel Bunnies

I found these Cadbury Caramel Bunnies a huge disappointment. They may only be 50p or so but I thought for that price we should be getting something more than this. I truly wouldn't pay more than 30p for it - baring in mind that 40g of chocolate is hardly anything.

There is one thing though, and that is they do look cute and a lot better than the Nestle Kit Kat Easter bars

I know these things aren't meant to be anything fantastic, just a quick treat for kids and would be great for those kids that really like caramel. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.

I'm not going to do a thorough scoring on this one. ButI'll give it a quick rating of 40%.

The Kit Kat Easter Bunny Bar is another disappointing bar along with the Malteaster I bought this week. It's almost not worth writing about. I think it was about 49p, but I wish I still had the money.

I'm traditionally a big fan of KitKats, especially after the KitKat Activity Experience Easter egg which was popular a couple of years ago, but this one is just a non-event. I couldn't even find out the net weight or make out the nutritional information without getting a magnifying glass.

The only difference between this and a KitKat Chunky is that it appears to be less high and have a bunny imprinted on the top. The flavours are the same, sweet, salty and a lingering after-taste. If I were you, I'd buy the original instead. Saying all that, I've just demolished it. It couldn't have been all that bad.

I won't give it a full review but, as a quick one, I'll give it 50%. Save your money and buy a filled egg instead!

Malteaster - Maltesers Mini Bunny Easter Treat

I must say that I'm hugely disappointed with these Malteaster mini Easter bunnies from Mars. They may only be 59p from Tesco but they mold for the bunny is of poor quality, the chocolate too sweet and the "crunchy & creamy Melteasters centre" tastes peppery to me (I am slightly ill so that may account for part of it).

This Easter treat is no where near 59p worth as its only 29g and mostly a biscuity concoction. That brings me to the issue - where the heck is the "creamy" part? It conspicuous in its absence in the one I've got!

I'm glad that Mars kept to the same chocolate tradition in this version as its very mild and not excessively sweet, although you could still say its missing a trick in being a bit of a non-entity. I'd certainly give this a miss if you're popping along to your local supermarket or Sweets2 in either wholesale quantities or boxes of 5 for £3.99 or a box of 4 from Chocolate Buttons for £3.10

Rating:

Taste: 20% - too peppery, not enough chocolate

Texture: 55 - the biscuit part was to dry and was too large a part of the Easter treat

Appearance: 40% - most of this score came from the wrapping, the bar itself was not detailed enough

Nutritional Information: 70% - there was a good amount of information present

Packaging: 80% - no excessive packaging

Price: 30% - not good value at all

Overall: 49.17% - only partially saved by packaging and info - a must avoid Easter treat

Over the last few years Nestle have been expanding their range of Milky Bar Easter eggs such as the perfectly decent Milky Bar Shaker Easter egg I reviewed earlier in 2009. But in the run up to Easter 2010 its the first time I've seen Milky Bar Mini Eggs

Obviously the normal milky bars are made out of very soft, crumbly white chocolate. These mini eggs aren't. They're not even as sweet as those bars. They've got a gorgeous crispy shell similar to Cadbury's Mini Eggs but with that white chocolate taste - and they're incredibly moreish with it.

I got 31 mini eggs in my packet and I'm sure everyone of you should have somewhere between 30 and 32 and for what £1 they're about 3p each which is fine. If you wanted to buy a box of 12 from Chocolate Buttons they'll set you back £10.65 or 89p which is outstanding value.

Rating:

Taste: 67% - I do like them, they're not "outstanding" but they are very nice. My only concern is that for them to be exceptional I'd have to have no doubts that I could eat a whole packet in one go.

Texture: 75% - a lovely crispy shell with soft white chocolate inside.

Appearance: 70% - they're not all that awe-inspiring to be honest and the reverse of the packaging is full of information but with any sales message

Packaging: 90% - there's hardly any waste in this sense.

Nutritional Information: 80% - there's loads on there including RDA for both children and adults. However, there could have been more such as the ingredients - which I thought were a legal requirement.

Price: 70% - in themselves they're an acceptable price, if a touch expensive. I'd say a price of 80p a packet would be more suitable.

Galaxy Chocolate Caramel Eggs - 2010 Version

Ah it looks like these were one of the first few out early last year but were called Chocolate Caramel Temptations. But this year the price has gone up to 59p each or 2 for £1.

I can see the different in the product this year in that the caramel inside is a lot firmer, all that could be due to the fact that they might have spent a long time in cold storage before I reviewed them?

Last year I wasn't a fan of Galaxy chocolate, and I'm still not this year either. I find it exceptionally sweet and of low quality. I'm sorry Galaxy fans!!

One thing I did notice was that the chocolate was a touch darker than I'd usually expect Galaxy chocolate to be, I'm not sure if it had to be stronger to withstand the bashing it'd probably get in transit, but there was a definite difference in appearance!

To be fair, I know these Galaxy Chocolate Caramel Eggs will appeal to the fans of normal Galaxy chocolate and the eggs were actually filled to the brim with caramel so I think I'd upgrade this rating to 5/10.

I'm going to try and spot when the supermarkets start to put Easter eggs on their shelves and make them available online by doing searches on the Supermarket price comparison and ordering service MySupermarket.

Thankfully the first day of searching, today with 112 until Easter 2010 there are 0 Easter eggs on the virtual shelves.

I'll chart it all up to keep you guys informed and highlight which supermarkets are more in the Easter spirit, or lagging on exploiting the important Christian festival.

Cadbury Works With Farmers To Reduce Cow Farts

I just love PR stuff. But sometimes its mutually beneficial, just like Cadbury's attempts to reduce their carbon footprint. Whilst reading a recent news item about Cadbury's efforts something struck me: The unwanted carbon-based gasses emitted in the process of manufacturing our food stuffs isn't always a factory-based issue.

Cadbury recently found that 60% of the emissions for its Dairy Milk chocolate bar was related to the cows that produce the milk that go into the bar and now they're working with farmers to introduce new diets to reduce this. Their overall target is to reduce emissions by 50% by 2020!

That may be a hard job, but they've already started by reducing the amount of plastic used in their small and medium sized Easter eggs by 202 tons which is the equivalent of 24m plastic bags or 4m two-litre drinks bottles!

The news is that Nestléare are in retro fever as it plans its 2010 Easter egg range.

We have information that their Smarties Easter egg will come with an 1980's style mug and their Rolo Easter egg will have a 1990's theme.

But what's even more shocking is that the news their Easter eggs will be hitting the shelves at the end of November. Did I hear that right?! We'd still be a month away from Christmas and they'll have Easter eggs on the shelves?! Madness.

Tesco Sold A Load Of Easter Eggs

This year I contributed to an article in the Telegraph about how the price of Easter eggs fell through the floor (or looked like it had) as a result of the collapse of Woolworths and all the Easter eggs they had allocated were redistributed to some supermarkets - including Tesco and now there was a follow-up piece in the Times.

Their Finance Director, Mr McIlwee, said that they had "sold a lot of Easter eggs because Woolworths had disappeared and we sold out a couple of days early."

It's good for consumers that they can buy cheaper Easter eggs in the one sense, but in the other, it ensures that they only stick to a couple of brands and aren't encouraged to try other types of chocolate as their prices weren't generally reduced.

My hope for next Easter is that people explore that range of fantastic Easter eggs available a bit more.

What more would your father want on Father's Day than a chocolate pizza? I reviewed an Easter chocolate pizza earlier this year and thought it was absolutely amazing!! The chocolate was actually exceptionally nice considering that it's not made by a chocolatier.

If you're organising an Easter egg hunt then you'll obviously be needing some cheap Easter eggs to get the kiddies looking for.

Cadbury's often do an Easter Egg Hunt pack but they're only really good for small families. Well we've found a pack of 170 5cm hollow chocolate Easter eggs with Easter designs on them for only £38.15 which is pretty fantastic! You can buy them from Chocolate Buttons.

Well F.W. from Huntingdon was the lucky person picked out at random and they now have a nice large parcel of chocolate on the way from my friends at Chocolate Trading Co.
