I thought I step away from the big brands for a moment and try something different. This Luxury Dark Chocolate Easter egg is from Chocolate Trading Company – one of the chocolate shops I head to first when I’m on a mission to buy fine chocolate!
I’m certain this won’t be the cheapest Easter egg you’ll see this year, what with Tesco selling the much lower quality ones for 97p each. But the Nestle Easter eggs aren’t for everyone. Sometimes it’s nice to treat ourselves and our loved ones with a bit of quality. And that’s where these Easter eggs come in.
But it’s the fine detail I love. Not only is there a great ribbon around the box itself, but there’s also a nice ‘golden’ tie around the packet that the egg is kept in. There’s also a very nice swirl design on the egg which appears to be all the rage these days.
This egg won’t fill the average person at around 180g but it should satisfy their craving for fine dark chocolate.
Also the actual Easter egg itself isn’t all that thick, even if the photo makes it look like it is. But with the egg you get about ten of the smaller eggs which come in dark raspberry, dark origin ganache and dark coffee flavours. I’ve tried them, and I must say they’re delicious!!
I must say also that the Easter egg has a wonderful punchy dark chocolate flavour – but still manages not to be overly bitter. I wouldn’t say it’s made with any single origin chocolate as the flavour seems to be a compromise of notes without having any distinctive notes that could indicate the bean strain or location of cultivation. That said, there is lovely roundness to the flavour which is helped along by the cane sugar – which I always think chocolate should be made with.
The sweetness also comes from the fact that the chocolate only has a minimum of 64% cocoa solids which means that it’s unlikely to be too bitter.
With all the harshness and uniqueness that comes with higher cocoa content and single origin status, I feel this is superb Easter egg for someone that would want a quality, luxury, gourmet or fine Easter egg, but may not be willing to go either too dark or too unique.
