Today I took delivery of The Easter Chocolate Gift Bag Collection from Green & Blacks. Which costs £30. But in it you get a large Maya Gold Easter egg, a Butterscotch one, a milk chocolate one, some smaller bars and this organic 70% dark chocolate Easter egg – altogether I think that’s a cracking price.

Obviously Green & Blacks is a perfect for the person wants an organic Easter egg, but they’re also just great for people that love dark chocolate. I reviewed this 70% dark chocolate Easter egg a couple of years ago when it was in a slightly different form. This year they’ve cut back on the packaging a great deal so it’s just basically the dark chocolate Easter egg in the metal foil wrapping inside a sleeve of a carton. A nice feature is that this sleeve has a little slit in the front so you can just get a peak of the Easter egg inside.

And when you get the egg out of the box you’ll notice that it’s still a decent size, fairly every and of a decent thickness. There’s nothing flimsy or unsubstantial about this Easter egg.

For me, all there dark chocolate has a sweet, acidic flavour which, from my reading about the chocolate making process, may mean that they’ve used the forastero cacao bean – I’m probably wrong as there’s many factors that would affect the flavour of the chocolate, but there are a number of edges to the flavour which many may not be used to if they’ve not tried ‘proper’ dark chocolate before.

The edges of the acidic flavour are tainted with a soft underbelly that has a more rustic taste that conflicts slightly with the sharper notes. In fact, I doubt you’ll taste dark chocolate like this other than from Green & Blacks.

The texture is fantastic. The melt takes slightly longer than other dark chocolate I’ve known. This would lead me to think that the chocolate is grown closer to the equator than other cacao in the same bracket. I’m going to stick my neck out and say that this cacao is from Ghana and box fermented.

Rating:
  • Taste: 70% – the bitterness with this Easter egg is more pronounced and rounded than others at the 70% cocoa level. Some might night appreciate the more rustic flavour if they’re not used to organic dark chocolate
  • Texture: 90% – I loved the longer lasting nature of the chocolate that has a drier texture
  • Appearance: 80% – inside and out, the egg looked great
  • Nutritional Information: 80% – there’s loads on the box, it’s just difficult to photograph
  • Price: 90% -
  • Overall: 90% -

Where To Buy The Green and Blacks 70% Organic Dark Chocolate Easter Egg
  • Green & Blacks – it’s much better value to buy as a gift box (it’ll also prove you love them more – cough)
  • Ethical Superstore – £5.99 – but you’ll love them less ;-)
