To my mind¬†Hotel Chocolat¬†are the masters of affordable, great tasting and¬†accessible¬†novelty chocolate gifts – be it for Easter, Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, birthdays or Halloween. No-one else comes close. Their house milk chocolate recipe is wonderful and their dark chocolate is great in the novelty context. It seems to me that much of the dark chocolate novelty stuff is pretty bland. There’s no acidity or, indeed, personality. You could blind taste it with many others and not be able to tell them apart. The main blend of Hotel Chocolat¬†dark chocolate is different however, it’s very distinctive, and I love it in this context.
These¬†Tiddly Chicks¬†are made out of that “house” dark chocolate and essentially just eight moulded owl-looking chicks which weigh 85g in total. You’ll pay ¬£5.50 for the pleasure which induced a deep breath through gritted teeth. You could save 10% with the voucher code EEPR10 which expires on 8th April 2012) which does bring it more into line with my¬†expectations. The thing is that you’ll definitely pay a premium because I don’t know of any other high-street company that offers dark chocolate novelty Easter gifts at this quality level. People who want dark chocolate at Eater just don’t seem to be catered for unless you want to spend ¬£20, ¬£30 or more.
The chocolate does have a lovely acidic quality with a slight nutty backdrop. I’ve got to be honest and say that the chocolate isn’t a patch on their¬†Purist¬†bars which are absolutely fantastic and a true bitter chocolate lover or diabetic may actually prefer one of those bars at Easter rather than a novelty gift though?
The price thing still irks me so I’ll give this pack a rating of ‘good’. I’m getting tight in my old age!
