Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs

Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs are by far the most popular at Easter as they typically serve the lower levels of demand with the likes of Cadbury and Nestle pumping out their really cheap Easter eggs whilst others such as Hotel Chocolat, Chocolate Trading Co. and Thorntons deal with the better quality ones.

Summary: Very good quality – but a price to match!

Hotel Chocolat
– have an absolutely fantastic selection of milk chocolate Easter eggs suitable for a wide variety of people – they seem to have created a list of different types of people and thought how best they can create something perfect for them. They’re just great at doing stuff like that. The milk chocolate Easter eggs that stand out for me are:

The Rocky Road to Caramel – I know it’s £26 but it comes delivered in a fantastic presentation box and half a kilo of chocolate inside. It really is a massive Easter egg in the conventional sense. You’ll get a load of chocolate treats inside. For me there may be too much milk chocolate involved, but I know there are millions of you out there that would feel very happy if one of these was delivered by post to their door the day before Easter Sunday.

If you were looking for milk chocolate Easter eggs for kids then you just have to go for their Happy Egg which costs just £6.50 75g of chocolate which may seem a bit steep, and it is, but it’s a cute egg

with a smiley face on the front and some little milk chocolate buttons. The chocolate used would also be much better, I would say, than the really cheap and nasty supermarket stuff.

If you didn’t want anything too fancy but did want a beast of a thick Easter egg then it has to be the Extra Thick Eggsibitionist egg which is just short of 15cm tall but packs a lot of chocolate into it. It also costs £26.
The Rocky Road To Caramel, which I reviewed here is an outstanding chocolate treat – its large, its flavoursome and interesting – well worth considering if you’re thinking about getting an Easter egg for your wife or girlfriend. The Your Eggsellency Extra Thick Egg is another ‘substantial’ egg which will satisfy a great number of chocolate lovers this year. But if you wanted to buy your loved-one a huge Easter egg to match how much you love them, then try the Milk Chocolate Ostrich Egg which weighs 1.4kg and costs £64!
You’ve also got the small milk chocolate eggs that pack a couple of pink champagne truffles. I know they cost £8 and weigh just 60g, but they are something fairly unique.

Just like the white chocolate Easter eggs you can also try their medium-sized ‘Beastie eggs’ which have a dark pattern to mimic either a cow or a zebra.

» Thorntons «

Summary: Great for families on a budget.

What I love most about Thorntons is their ability to create personalised Easter eggs very quickly and they’re pretty damn cheap too. Virtually all of their mid-range and cheaper milk chocolate eggs can be personalised with some icing – so you can have a child’s or lovedone’s names iced onto the egg.

Many people will love the Thorntons Continental Easter egg which is very reasonably priced at £9.99 which is much less than the Hotel Chocolat premium range of eggs. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the Viennese chocolates that go with one of the versions, whilst the Continental chocolates that go with the other version aren’t all that bad.

Just as Hotel Chocolat do, Thorntons do an extra-thick milk chocolate Easter egg, but at a fraction of the price. You can get one that can be personalised for just £6.50. For the same price you can also have flavoured milk chocolate eggs such as fudge.

If you prefer to have a large Thornton’s egg then they do one for £9.99 which has a decent 326g of chocolate. Or for just more than a third of the price you can have 153g “economy” style egg.

For people that are diabetic they do a “no added sugar” milk chocolate egg which does cost £6.50, but I expect they’d have to do a fairly small run of this chocolate.

At the higher end they do a £14.99 Banoffee pie Easter egg which is part of their British puddings range. I’m definitely going to be getting one of these to review! But if you wanted to spend £24.99 then you can get a giant one that weighs 620g. It seems that Thorntons are in a battle with Hotel Chocolat on the sizes of their eggs as, from what I’ve seen so far, the Hotel Chocolat one in this category costs £1.01 more and has 120g less chocolate.

Some of the worst Easter eggs I’ve tried actually do come from Cadbury’s and their Koko Easter egg is a classic example – it has very little taste, and not one I’d seek out.

And if you’re looking for Fairtrade Easter eggs you can get them from Thorntons too with their classic Thorntons Fairtrade Easter egg which has very little packaging.

As the other chocolate shops add put their eggs on sale I’ll add them to this list.
